Sometimes making decisions about what’s in your best interests can be difficult. You may feel uncomfortable, exploited or under pressure to make decisions against your wishes. Decision making can be made more difficult when it involves family and others close to you.
You have the right to make informed decisions about issues affecting you such as nominating powers of attorney, making a will or managing your assets and money. Decisions involving family can sometimes be the hardest to make, especially if your adult child asks you to move back home or to loan money.
You can help protect yourself by being informed about your choices, decisions you are making and agreements you are entering into, particularly if you feel uncomfortable about them.
Where appropriate you can also take steps to protect yourself and your assets by being aware of your rights.
For simple advice on making powers of attorney, go to the Office of the Public site – Planning .
