Eligible Victorian households will soon be able to access a 3-hour, free-power window that shares the benefits of cheap solar power with more Victorians.
The Victorian Midday Power Saver will provide participating households 3 hours of cost-free electricity in the middle of the day. This will potentially help with cost of living and reducing pressures on the grid at busy times.
The Midday Power Saver is optional and may not suit every household. Find out if it’s right for you.
Save on your energy bill
Victorian households that sign up to the Midday Power Saver offer could save between $149 and $428 a year. The amount depends on your circumstances. This includes if you are able to shift at least 5% to 30% of your energy use to the free 3-hour window.
To get the biggest benefit, you could try using energy intensive appliances between 11 am and 2 pm, such as:
- washing machines
- clothes dryers
- hot water heat pumps
- air conditioners
- electric heating.
Using appliance timers can help you take advantage of the free electricity, even when you're not at home.
Households with an electric vehicle may be able to save even more. It’s estimated that EV owners could save an additional $674 a year by charging during the free period. By doing this, you could bring your potential total savings to up to $1,102 annually.
Availability
The Midday Power Saver will be available to households with a smart meter from Thursday 1 October 2026. Most retailers will have to make the offer available to their customers.
The Midday Power Saver will ensure participating households are not charged for electricity used between 11 am and 2 pm every day, including weekends.
Access the optional Midday Power Save by signing up via your energy retailer. Contact your provider from Thursday 1 October 2026.
Make sure the Midday Power Saver is right for you
Before you sign up for the Midday Power Saver, think about how you use your energy and speak with your electricity retailer. They can help you understand whether the offer suits your household.
Your energy retailer must explain:
- how the offer could affect your electricity bills
- whether another plan may better suit your household
- that savings depend on your ability to shift electricity use into the free period between 11 am and 2 pm.
You will also have consumer protections, including a cooling-off period and the ability to leave the offer without exit fees.
Compare before you switch
The Midday Power Saver may not be the cheapest option for every household.
Before signing up, use Victorian Energy to compare available offers and understand how different plans may affect your energy costs. There will be small increases in the price of electricity used outside the free period.
Victorian Energy Compare is the Victorian Government’s free and independent energy price comparison service. The service can help you find an energy plan that suits your household needs.
Additional benefits with rooftop solar
Households with rooftop solar already benefit from generating their own electricity during the day. However, but some may still benefit from the Midday Power Saver.
For example, households with a battery or electric vehicle can use the free midday electricity to charge their battery or vehicle when solar generation is lower. They can then use that stored energy later when electricity prices are higher.
