Mary from the Yarraville Life Activities Club

Mary from the Yarraville Life Activities Club

Mary joined the Yarraville Life Activities Club in 2014. After retirement, Mary was looking for activities with people with similar interests. She read an article in the local newspaper about a new Life Activities Club starting in Yarraville and thought she would give it a go.

‘It was the best thing I ever did,’ Mary says.

Mary takes part in a range of activities offered by the Yarraville Life Activities Club.

‘I enjoy outings, dinner, book club, craft and Tai Chi. My balance and coordination have improved through doing Tai Chi. It is a very gentle exercise, but it has improved my joint mobility and strengthened my muscles. I am always revived after a session and now sleep better. A bonus is the coffee and laughter afterwards with friends.’

One of the best surprises for Mary was the new, genuine friendships she has formed.

‘I didn't realise there were so many people with such similar interests to mine,’ Mary says.

Mary encourages anyone interested in joining to get in touch with their local Life Activities Club and try out an activity before they join.

Lynn from the Life Activities Club Knox

Lynn from the Life Activities Club Knox

About 8 years ago, a council notice about the Knox Life Activities Club caught Lynn’s eye. She was approaching retirement and wondered what she might do to fill in the days, so she joined the club.

For the next 3 years, Lynn attended evening functions and weekend outings so when she did retire, she already had many new friends.

Now as a committee member, Lynn organises live theatre events, helps to arrange holidays and sets up an evening card game each week.

If you’re approaching retirement or retired, Lynn encourages you to give your local Life Activities Club a go.

‘We have so many diverse events for people to attend each week or month that no one needs to sit at home and feel lonely. I encourage people I meet to come along to a coffee morning or games day to see what Life Activities has to offer to suit them,’ Lynn says.
