‘I'm a retired social worker. So when I came to Warrnambool and didn't know very many people, I thought, what will I do? I'll join everything.’

Meet Virginia, a dedicated volunteer who has spent many years supporting people to transition from prison to the community.

Through volunteering with Anglicare programs, Virginia has passionately supported people of all ages to access emergency relief and connect with services. Plus, enjoy a friendly chat!

‘It’s a worthwhile support system to have for everybody – for the community and the people who have come out of prison.’

Outside of her role at Anglicare, Virginia leads a National Heart Foundation walking group and advocates for people living in Supported Residential Services with the Office of the Public Advocate.

‘Volunteering is a very rewarding experience for me. It’s actually educated me about the community I live in.’

In 2024, Virgina received the Victorian Senior of the Year Ageing Well Award.

‘Just because someone is ageing, it doesn't mean that they haven't got any ambition. Life doesn't stop then. In fact, that's when it can really kick in and get going.’

Virginia’s commitment to walking alongside offenders post-release helps to create a healthier, more connected community for all.
