Neighbourhood houses

Neighbourhood houses provide a place for the local community to come together, learn and get involved.

What is a neighbourhood house?

Neighbourhood houses provide a place for people to gather in their local community to learn and get involved. They provide social, educational, recreational and support activities, tailored to each individual community’s needs. Neighbourhood houses are not-for-profit organisations that aim to break down social barriers, connect people to their local community, and give them a greater sense of belonging.

There are over 400 neighbourhood houses in Victoria which means there’s bound to be one near you. They have different names, including:

  • Neighbourhood House
  • Community House
  • Learning Centre
  • Living and Learning Centre
  • Neighbourhood Centre
  • Community Centre.

Everyone is welcome

Neighbourhood houses are all about providing a warm, welcoming and caring space where everyone feels valued.

They welcome people of all ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds, genders and sexualities.

What kind of activities do neighbourhood houses provide seniors?

Neighbourhood houses play an important role in a positive ageing experience for older Victorians. They offer a range of opportunities to help older people to remain socially connected, mentally active and physically healthy.

Every neighbourhood house is unique and will offer different activities depending on the needs of their community, but some common activities and programs you may find include:

  • gentle exercise classes such as tai chi or yoga
  • arts and crafts classes
  • sewing and knitting clubs
  • cooking classes
  • community lunches and events
  • community sheds and community gardens
  • social groups such as grandparent groups, garden clubs or walking groups
  • computer training and internet access
  • assistance with technology to help seniors connect online
  • English classes for people where English is a second language
  • welfare support such as food banks and government services
  • playgroups and homework clubs for young people.

Some neighbourhood houses also have community sheds and community gardens.

How can I get involved?

Neighbourhood house activities are generally run at low or no cost to participants.

Information about the activities available at your local neighbourhood house will be available online and in printed flyers available at the house. You can also call and ask for information about activities.

Neighbourhood houses are led by a volunteer committee and rely on local volunteers to run their activities. If you’re interested in giving back to your community, talk to your local neighbourhood house about opportunities.
